ADVANTAGES OF BEING IN A BILINGUAL PROGRAM

Being bilingual (and multicultural) better equips students with not only language skills but also important social skills needed to work with others from varying cultures and backgrounds.

Studies have shown there are many benefits of being bilingual such as:

  • Early Bilingual Education Increases Fluency in Later Years.

It generally takes 5–7 years to be proficient in a second language.  The earlier a new language is thought the better!

  • Better Educational Performance

Studies in language development show that when young children have more exposure to all languages at an early age, it actually gives them a distinct academic advantage throughout life.Bilingual children are able to focus more intently on the topics at hand and avoid distractions from academic pursuits. They are also able to demonstrate higher levels of cognitive flexibility, or the ability to change responses based on environment and circumstances.

  • Improved Health

Bilinguals are less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease earlier in life than monolinguals. People that know a second language are also bound to experience low-stress levels, and better neurological health.

  • Greater Job Opportunities

Knowing a second language makes resumes stand out and can boost the applicant to the top of the interview list with potential employers. Also, individuals that are bilingual make more money and are offered more job opportunities.

  • Increased Creativity

Bilingual individuals  have been found to possess advanced creativity. The ability to speak more than one language shapes the brain’s capability of thinking outside the box and thinking up innovative ways to solve problems.
